Target vs. Walmart Apps: Which One Helps You Save More?

Super Savers, when it comes to stretching your dollars, your smartphone can be just as powerful as a coupon binder. Both the Target and Walmart apps promise savings, convenience, and a smoother shopping experience—but they go about it in very different ways. Knowing how each one works can help you decide which app fits your routine and your budget best.

The Target App: Straightforward Savings Up Front

The Target app is built for shoppers who like to see their savings instantly. Whether you’re browsing the aisles or double-checking prices, the app makes it easy to scan items and confirm what you’ll pay before you reach the register. If you scan an item and the price doesn’t appear, you can add it to your in-app cart to reveal the cost.

One of the biggest advantages is how discounts are applied. Target uses a mix of store and manufacturer coupons, and the savings come off immediately at checkout. There’s no waiting, no tracking, and no wondering if your reward will go through later. This makes the app especially helpful for shoppers who prefer to pay with cash or are on a tight budget and don’t have the extra money to cover full price before getting cash back.

If you’re enrolled in Target Circle or Target Circle 360, you can enter your phone number at checkout or scan your in-app barcode to apply offers. Gift cards can also be scanned into the app and stored for later use, along with any rewards you’ve earned.

However, there’s one small catch: you have to remember to enable your offers and rewards before you check out. Like most apps, they won’t apply automatically unless they’re activated. You can also choose to save them for a future trip when it works best for your budget. The exception is Target Circle deals, which are applied automatically to your purchases. Also, if you use a saved payment method, you’ll need your password for added security.

For those who prefer planning ahead, the app allows you to shop for pickup or delivery directly. Just keep in mind that there’s no scan-and-go feature, so all purchases still go through the standard checkout process.

The Walmart App: Rewards That Build Over Time

The Walmart app will alert you if there’s a qualifying offer available when you scan an item for a price check. However, its savings system works very differently. Instead of coupons, Walmart offers Walmart Cash—a rebate-style reward that you earn after making purchases.

Walmart Cash can be used on future purchases, both in-store and online, functioning like store credit. While there is a way to convert it into actual cash, it requires at least $25 in rewards and a visit to the customer service desk—though this is something I haven’t personally tested yet.

For shoppers who primarily use cash, the system can feel less convenient. To redeem offers, you typically need to scan your receipt after your purchase and wait for approval. While this process can work, it isn’t always guaranteed, which may be frustrating if you’re counting on those savings.

Using Walmart Cash in-store is simple and built into the checkout process. At checkout, you can scan the QR code on the register screen, apply your Walmart Cash, and then choose to continue your payment with cash.

Another important detail: if you use both Walmart Cash and Ibotta and have overlapping offers, Walmart Cash usually takes priority due to a partnership between the two platforms.

When it comes to gift cards, Walmart requires a physical card or a digital version with a scannable barcode to use them in-store—even if the card is saved to your account.

And if you’re trying to check a price by adding an item to your cart, that feature is only available to Walmart+ members, which limits access for some shoppers.

Which One Should You Use?

If you like your savings to hit right away—no waiting, no follow-ups—the Target app is the clear winner. It’s simple, reliable, and works especially well if you’re paying with cash or sticking to a strict budget.

On the other hand, if you don’t mind tracking rewards and building savings over time, the Walmart app can still deliver value. It may take a little more effort, but those rewards can add up if you stay consistent.

In the end, the best choice comes down to your shopping style. Do you want instant gratification at checkout, or are you okay playing the long game for future savings? Either way, using these apps wisely can help you keep more money in your pocket every time you shop.
