Super Saver and the Rise of Sticker Shock, Ep. 2

Episode 2: The Road to "Almost There"

The platform lights steadied, but the air still felt thin, like the world hadn’t quite decided to be normal again.

Super Saver checked the phone. The convention ticket was there. Locked. Real.
That part of the cost was done.

Below it, the travel app had opened on its own. For a fleeting moment, an icon flashed on the screen: a grinning sticker labeled Sticker Shock, the villain of hidden costs. Then it was gone, like it had never been there, but the fees had already begun their quiet work.

A route unfolded across the screen—clean lines, helpful arrows, a neat little estimate at the bottom.

Then the estimate loosened.

A service fee slipped in beside it.
A timing adjustment nudged the number higher.
A station surcharge found a place to stand.

None of the numbers moved fast.
They settled in, as if they had always been there.

The commuter train’s arrival tone chimed down the platform. People shifted forward. The day continued, ordinary as ever.

From the glass of the phone, the same pleasant voice returned.

“Getting there is part of the total.”

Super Saver looked up at the platform lights. They weren’t flickering now.

They just seemed… brighter.

The number finished settling.

Super Saver blinked, then blinked again, as if that might shake the extra digits loose. It didn’t. The total stayed put—tidy, polite, and taller than it had any right to be.

A new line slid into place beneath the route map:
Peak-time adjustment.

“Peak time for what?” Super Saver whispered.

The platform answered with noise instead of words. The incoming train breathed heat into the morning. Shoes scuffed forward. Someone laughed at a screen. Life went on, indifferent to the math.

Super Saver tapped the tiny gray question mark beside the charge.

A panel unfolded. The language was friendly. The meaning was not.

Peak-time adjustment: Applies when demand is high. Demand is currently high.

High compared to when? The question went unanswered. The panel closed itself, satisfied.

Another line appeared.
Station convenience fee.

Sticker Shock had a sense of humor, apparently. The ticket wasn’t for a train ride at all, but the number didn’t care.

The total nudged higher. Not a leap—just enough to feel intentional.

From the glass, the pleasant voice returned, the same calm cadence as before. “You’re not paying for the journey,” it said. “You’re paying for the moments between here and there.”

Super Saver stared at the route. The arrows hadn’t changed. The destination hadn’t moved. Only the cost of approach had grown teeth.

A thought surfaced, unwelcome but clear: If the price of getting there can expand this quietly, how many other ‘between here and there’ moments are already charging rent?

The train doors slid open with a sigh. People boarded. The day insisted on progress.

Super Saver stepped forward—and the app chimed again.

A final line stacked itself at the bottom:
Faster arrival option available.

The total rose to make room.

The voice softened, almost kind. "Every shortcut has its surcharge."

The doors began to close.

In a blink…

The platform dissolved. Super Saver’s feet moved on their own, stepping into a hum of banners, booths, and machines promising quick cash. Somewhere, a grinning sticker flashed across a screen. Sticker Shock had arrived ahead of them.

TO BE CONTINUED…

Reality Check: How to Dodge the "Almost There" Trap

Hidden fees love the last mile. Here’s how to keep them from ambushing your plans:

  • Hunt for the final screen. Don’t stop at the first total you see. Tap through every step until you hit the confirmation page that shows the all‑in price.

  • Toggle off defaults. Extras often come pre‑selected. Look for tiny checkboxes or “included” options that quietly cost extra.

  • Check timing rules. Peak‑time or demand‑based adjustments can swing prices. If your schedule is flexible, compare a few times/dates.

  • Scan for ‘convenience’ language. Fees with friendly names are still fees. If a charge doesn’t change the service you’re getting, question it.

  • Screenshot totals before you commit. It helps you catch late additions and gives you leverage if something changes at the last step.
